Leah Mariani’s latest series depicts women who are standing or sitting, crouched or squatting, folded and/or sleeping. The artist is interested in the way the figure is contained within the boundary of the canvas. The lines on the clothing accentuate the movement of the figure within the constrained space and give the work a graphic quality that contrasts with the realism of the skin tones.

Mariani has chosen a soft, muted color palette with warm oranges and subdued greens, which gives the painting a calming but somewhat melancholic atmosphere. The subject is a seated figure, likely female, with closed eyes, suggesting a moment of reflection or inner peace.

The use of lines, particularly on the clothing, adds a dynamic contrast to the smooth skin tones, creating a rhythm in the otherwise static posture of the figure. The stripes, which are prominent both on the top and pants, give the figure a structural and almost geometric quality. The shoes are drawn more abstractly, almost blending into the ground with the light, sketch-like outline.

The contrast between the detailed rendering of the hands and face, and the more stylized approach to the clothing, emphasizes the emotional depth of the subject. The face and hands draw attention to the human vulnerability, while the clothes seem to serve as an outer shell, structured yet less significant than the person themselves.

Overall, the artwork feels personal, as if it's capturing a quiet moment of introspection or self-awareness. There’s a beautiful tension between the soft, human aspects and the more rigid, linear elements, inviting the viewer to ponder the emotions and story behind the image.
