A French artist who draws her emotions: Sia

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Alexia, called Sia by my friends in Spain and in Korea. I’m 31 years old.

I’m French, but I’m a traveler. I’ve been living in Switzerland for 6 years, and I live in Canary Islands since 3 years. And now, I’m going to discover Korea.

Can you describe your art a little bit?

I've been drawing for many years, ever since I first held a pen. Two years ago, I decided to add color to my life and started painting. I purchased all the necessary supplies without formally learning techniques. I simply wanted to give it a try, and I found that I enjoyed it.

Many of my paintings are imperfect and unfinished, but that's precisely what I appreciate. I aim to stimulate people's imagination and encourage them to complete the artwork in their own minds.

What are your inspirations?

I paint my emotions, that’s why I always write a text for each painting. I think that, what inspire me the most, is the emotions shared by people, their face, their posture or their eyes. And their energy, a lot!

Who are your role models?

I find myself truly inspired by sculpture and nature. Sculpture is truly astonishing in the way it portrays the human form as if people were captured within. Sometimes, the passage of time causes parts of their bodies to be missing, and that's what makes it beautiful. Time, in its perfect imperfection, creates these captivating effects. During my trip to Greece and the Acropolis, I experienced a moment that will forever be etched in my memory.

I am captivated too by sculptures that don't necessarily represent something concrete but instead allow observers to imagine what they could be or what they might become.

As for painting, it holds a special place in my heart. If it weren't for my frequent travels, I would have a multitude of paintings adorning my home. If I had to choose a favorite style, I could spend hours contemplating Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings. One artwork that touched me deeply many years ago is Van Gogh's "Starry Night." The way he painted was simply astonishing, so dramatic and alive, creating movement through the combination of colors. I am drawn to the night, stars, and solitude. As a night owl, it is during those quiet hours when my mind finds its deepest calm and my creativity soars. I've painted around 90% of my artworks at night.

I also have a deep admiration for contemporary artists such as Jackson Pollock, Banksy (my personal favorite), the amazing Takashi Murakami, and Louise Bourgeois. The sculpture "Maman" was particularly impressive!

On Instagram, I discovered two artists who have left a profound impact on me: Pride Nyasha, with their captivating watercolor paintings, and Underdott, whose ability to convey emotions is truly remarkable.

In the end, I must say that various forms of art inspire me. Each has its unique way of resonating with my soul.

The effect of the city you live in on your art?

Where I live is a very peaceful place. My terrace has a view of the ocean in Las Palmas, a place called Las Canteras. When I’m there, everything fades away, and the ocean has a way of calming my mind and heart. Watching sunsets brings me true happiness.

The ocean has a remarkable way of soothing our minds and hearts, taking away any troubles or concerns. It's amazing how the ever-changing nature of the world reminds us that we, too, are constantly evolving and never the same day after day. It's in those moments of reflection and connection with nature that we often find genuine happiness, and creativity.

Artwork or artists you admire outside of your field?

I love music, and I can’t go a day without listening to it. Whether it’s indie, rap, rock, pop, classical, or any other genre, my choice depends on my mood. However, there’s one aspect of music that truly captivates me: the lyrics. As someone who also enjoys writing, I have a deep appreciation for music that speaks to me. I find it fascinating when songs delve into interesting and thought-provoking subjects, rather than simply rehashing what is already known. The combination of music and meaningful lyrics creates a profound connection that resonates with me on a deeper level. Thank you for asking!

The songs I love these days are d4vd Worthless, Dirty Dancer_Orion Sun, Lonely_RM, Uncomparable_Ekkstacy

When did you start to be interested in art?

The first time I began drawing was when I was 7 years old. I had a strong desire to depict a sailboat, a voilier, using charcoal. It was then that I developed a deep admiration for charcoal. I was captivated by the ability to manipulate contrasts and play with light using my fingers. Initially, I focused on drawing boats and nature, and eventually ventured into portraying portraits.

Can you describe your art in one sentence?

Art is an expression of our fantasies and imagination, serving as an avenue for exploring and materializing ideas and concepts that extend beyond the confines of reality. Art is Unreality.

What types of paint do you use in your art?

Acrylic, charcoal and textured paste

What do your close friends think about your art?

I used to hide my paintings from everyone for a long time. It's only been a few weeks since I started sharing them. Initially, I shared them sparingly, but then, for some unknown reason, I wanted to keep them to myself. I don't feel like I have the legitimacy for it, I'm not sure why. I'm naturally a shy and discreet person.

Since I started posting my paintings, I've received numerous messages. People have been telling me how amazing and beautiful they are. Last week, my mom sent me a message expressing regret for not allowing me to pursue art school as I had wanted and mentioned that I was meant for it. It made me incredibly happy.

What do you like to do in your social life?

I thoroughly enjoy my work and dedicate a significant amount of time to it. I've been running my own company for six years now, specializing in communication and business development. While it may seem serious, I need to be exceptionally creative every day. We have the opportunity to embark on numerous unconventional endeavors worldwide to help businesses flourish and shine, through social media and events. I work as a communication director and business developer for a production company that organizes prestigious dinners and events for notable occasions like the Cannes Festival, Fashion Week, Formula 1 Monaco, Roland Garros, and more. It's an absolute blast, and I relish the opportunity to meet people from all around the globe.

Aside from work, I have a passion for singing, sports, and food. These are additional aspects of my life that bring me joy and fulfillment.
